STRUMENTAL ANALYSIS OF THE STABILITY OF THE TREES
WITH V.T.A. METHOD

V.T.A. method, put to point by prof. Mattheck in Germany and recognized in the legal place of business at European level, applies a gradual procedure for the analysis of the internal conditions of wood.

PROCEEDING STAGES

Operative phases:

1 Check up of the tree to find out defaults and critic aspects for stability. If anomalies as cracks, cavity, heavy inclination are not discovered the control is made after a distance of one year. If instead there are structural or pricked imperfections, investigation is instrumentally examined in detail.

2 Instrumental analysis with rock drill. This instrument measures the speed of sound-wave into the wood. The speed depends from the wood’s quality. Comparing the values obtained with normal ones is possible to diagnose the presence of cavity or internal decays.

3 Once noticed the presence of internal anomaly, analysis is done with Resist graph. This instrument analyzed density of internal wood, millimetre after millimetre. Thanks to this operation is possible to highlight the healthy wood part, as regards the ray of the examined section.

4  Finally, to determinate shock resistance, a sample of wood is taken with the Pressler auger and exposed to Fractometro analysis. This tool measures the load of break which causes the sinking. Comparing the value with the normal parameters you can judge wood’s quality.

On the basis of the values obtained from the previous analyses, the tree is collocated in a risk phyto static class (A, B, C, C-D, D), based on the Green Service of Turin Municipality. A technical relation is drawn up which documents for the subject in exam the static arrangement, the consistency of the wood and possible culture interventions necessary to guarantee the stability and the survival.

Each tree can be provided with the following enclosures:
· identification card of the tree
· numerical and graphics notes in relation to analysis
· photographic documentation
· the examination is signed by a qualified forest doctor
